They also explain how you can access copies of the many Fine Games' online catalogs at your convenience. THIS UPDATE ISSUE WAS ORIGINALLY PROVIDED IN TWO PARTS. The two parts have been joined for your conveninece. So much has transpired since the last Update in October that two parts became necessary. C O N T E N T S Fine Games NEWS .......... Fine Games relocated with all the effort and hassle that that involved. And I divorced, another wee hassle. While the outward signs of activity may have slowed, rest assured that Fine Games is still alive & quite well. In particular, Fine Games celebrates its fifth birthday on April Fools Day. Thanks to each of you, my gaming customers, who made this all possible. MY ONLINE CATALOGS will be updated soon after you see this (by Thurs., 3/20). These are once again up to the minute. And they include many special deals thruout. Take a peek. IMPROVED PHONE SERVICE is in place. Fine Games now has two phone lines available. Thus, you'll almost always be able to get thru to me or my digital answering assistant -- and not get a busy signal. While I am often not able to answer the phone myself, you will be able to leave a message. Please do so so that I can get back to you ASAP. This is especially true if you are calling on my toll free number. MANUFACTURER CONTACT INFO is available on my WWW site. In additon to phone #s, this now includes both email and WWW addresses where available. VISA & MASTERCARD now require additional information in order to process a charge. Your billing address -- the address to which your credit card bill is sent -- is now *required*. You will be asked for this with your next order if the information isn't already on file. MONITORING A WWW SITE for changes is easy. A handy, free service will notify you by email whenever the Fine Games, or any other, web site changes. Visit http://www.netmind.com/URL-minder/new/register.html for simple directions. This will work with ANY web site, and will be offered directly from the Fine Game's site soon. AOL recently changed software and, unwisely, used a version that isn't compatible with common WWW server software. Thus, some people saw some especially obscure error messages. This doesn't seem to be a problem today but if you have problems accessing my site from AOL, set your Graphic preferences to COMPRESSED from Keyword: Preferences. YOUR SUBSCRIPTION to this newsletter assumes that I have your correct email address. If you change your address for any reason, please send me an update including your name and your new email address. N E W G A M E S & P E N D I N G R E L E A S E S Listings of games released since October, as well as of upcoming releases, will be sent in two separate files due to the considerable size of the listing. I N D U S T R Y N E W S MAYFAIR GAMES SELF-DESTRUCTS. For reasons that are still not entirely clear, Mayfair Games decided to liquidate itself by the end of February. This *might* have been due to cash flow problems or due to the problems peculiar to a maritial dissolution & divorce. Regardless, Mayfair was the foremost example of a *successful* board game manufacturer and had a respectable line of train and abstract adult games. In particular, it had wild success with its reprinted games such as Settlers of Catan and Cosmic Encounters. So its demise is especially troubling. As for Mayfair's game, most are still available. Stock of a few games -- including Cosmic Encounters, Family Business and Settlers of Catan -- were exhausted early this year and are no longer available as new games (Settlers *IS* still available, however). Mayfair's games should again be available from one or many companies that end up buying Mayfair's assets. Avalon Hill and other firms are bidding on the assets, but who will walk away with Mayfair's cherries isn't known. TWO MAJOR RELEASES are notable in the last 5 months. GRD finally, _finally_ released the long awaited War in the Desert. This is a revision of the Desert War, Torch games and the Near East kit. Since these games were pretty accessable members of the Europa family -- low unit density and smaller areas of play -- this package is recommended. And of course, Settlers of Catan,2nd edition was released by Mayfair just before its demise. This version changed the color of the 4 player sets and added rules for 5-8 player games (requiring a second copy of the game, ideally a 1st edition copy). Stock of this edition was exhausted as soon as it was released. THE GAMERS INCREASED PRICES SUBSTANTIALLY in February. They did this by increasing their doemestic shipping rates from zero to $5 *per item*, blaming the "massive price increase announced by UPS". Now, UPS's increase was on the order of 3.6%, about what they've done every year in my memory. The direct cost to ship 5#s of games (2 typical Gamers games) coast to coast jumped from $5.62 to $5.86. Wow. (Also, unless the recipient does business from their home, there was no addtional change in rates,as the Gamers suggested in their justification.) I'm sorry, but it just doesn't cost $5 *per item* to ship games whose average weight is 1.5#. The incremental cost is actually less than $1. *** Note that the Gamers' shipping terms changed again, this time to $5/first item + $1/ea additional. Still, even at this it represents roughly a 9% increase. While The Games may feel that ~$3/game isn't significant, you very well may. 3/20/96 GMT ANNOUNCED PRICE INCREASES more directly. They have not yet listed specifics, but have indicated that increases will be on the order of 10-20%. Which is rather schizophrenic given that their recent sales have offered their games at 50% of list or less. COLUMBIA CHANGED PRICES, too, some going up several dollars and several going down by a buck. No big deal here. Columbia has also taken steps towards going direct mail, feeling that the distributors didn't provide sufficient advanced orders to their long-delayed sequel to Bobby Lee, Sam Grant. For now, they increased their prices to distributors while offering the games direct. Decision Games upped the trade prices of S&Ts #156 and below. These earlier issues now have a list price of $15 (sold for $10.50 here). S&T also raised the cover price of its most recent issues to $20 ($14 here). The CANADIAN WARGAMER'S JOURNAL is adapting to life in the not so fast lane by reducing is publication schedule while also planning to publish die cut coutners and variants with future issues. Personnally, I think this is good. UPS INCREASED PRICES BY 3.6% overall, as mentioned above. This is a significant, tho hardly "massive". But for firms doing business by mail, it is an increase that never goes unnoticed. One other significant change UPS made was to make *all* shipments to residences subject to residential rates. Which rules out the fiction some shippers use to justify claiming the lower commerical rates apply. But this was a fiction before, and no more or less a fiction now. Just much easier for UPS to audit their charges. FTC MAIL ORDER RULES apply to ANY and ALL orders for merchandise made by mail or by the use of telephony (ie telephone, fax, email or the internet). So it applies to more than just "mail" orders. It applies to all those individuals -- whether formally a business or not -- offering items for sale on the 'net. Be aware that those selling by mail or telecommunications must observe these rules in all cases: (1) Items must be shipped within 30 days, or within another time frame explicitedly stated. (2) If the due date above cannot be met, the shipper must provide you with a new ship day AND allow you to cancel the order if if you don't wish to accept it. The company must contact the buyer, not the other way around. Refunds must be sent with 7 days. C O N T E N T S NEW Games ................ New & Pending Releases Your SUGGESTIONS .........
